Midwifery Exchange in Ghana

Our Mission

Ghana faces a high neonatal mortality rate of 29 deaths per 1,000 live births, surpassing the
Sub-Saharan average of 27 (WHO, 2023). Maternal mortality is similarly high, especially in Ghana's upper west region due to limited resources.

Our mission is to empower midwives across Ghana through continuing education leveraging the WHO, and AAP-created "Helping Babies Breathe" and "Helping Mothers and Babies Survive" courses, teaching life-saving skills in low-resource communities.  Utilizing a sustainable model, our ultimate goal is to improve maternal and newborn survival in Ghana through professional collaboration, training and skills practice using evidence-based simulation.

This important work is made possible by a Fulbright grant and the US Embassy and is further supported through the generous donations of individuals and organizations who believe in our mission.

Our Approach

Facilitate midwife trainings in Helping Babies Breath, Essential Newborn Care, and OB Emergency Drills.

Provide opportunity for midwives in Ghana to become Master Trainers in the curriculum, thus making the project sustainable.

Provide lifesaving equipment to the Upper West Region of Ghana with low-impact simulation models and training guides.

Continue communication, education, and funding support towards these efforts.
